What is preventive Maintenance?

The primary goal of Preventive Maintenance (PM) is to avoid or mitigate the consequences of failure of equipment. This may be by preventing the failure before it actually occurs which PM and condition based maintenance help to achieve. It is designed to preserve and restore equipment reliability and to extend the life of the equipment by replacing worn components before they actually cause system failure.

Preventive maintenance can include partial or complete overhauls at specified periods; the amount of preventive maintenance needed depends on whether the equipment is used more than a standard work week or more than 1 shift per day.

Reasons for Preventive Maintenance

There are significant risks of equipment failure and downtime associated with neglected equipment.
